Semi-circular or elliptical fanlights over the front door are the biggest clue to this style. Windows would be double-hung sash arranged signally in rows both vertically and horizontally (never paired). In our area pilasters (flattened columns against the front) or arcades (flattened arches against the front) can also be seen.

The Greek temple was the model for this style. The triangular pediment supported by columns can be seen in the triangular gabel end accentuated by "returns" at the roof ends (the pediment) with the flat wide vertical corner boards (the columns). Fancy versions would have "real" pediments and columns. Doorways were impressive with wide surrounds, sometimes columns and transom and/or side lights. The wide "frieze" became a wide board under the eaves often with small windows with grilles.
